Any exploration of the deep "caveman-level" subconscious of a dad will likely expose the "throwing sticks and stones" impulse. An addictive outlet for that impulse is skipping stones across a body of water. There is just something fascinating about the "that shouldn't really be able to happen, but it does (as proved by the RAF)" observation of a stone hopping off into the distance.
Kids love it too. I pull this trick out at every available opportunity, which isn't that often, unfortunately. I've been trying to teach my two oldest how to do this, but they don't have the knack just yet. We will just have to keep trying.
Or we could go to a tournament or two, just to get tips.
